The Battle of the Horns

The second race of the season has finished and the Red Bulls have dominated the track.

Jeddah Track 2023 Grand Prix

The dust has settled from Sunday’s race and the championship contenders have been decided. A dominating performance by Red Bull led to a two-headed battle. With a few shocking results, that could cause for an exciting battle for second in the constructors. As the race kicked off for a third consecutive year in Jeddah, in 2021, Lewis Hamilton claimed victory. In 2022, a tough battle between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, where the Dutch Lion won. However, this year the race was faster and tamer than the previous two.

With a great start, Alonso had taken first place heading into the first corner. With Pérez behind in a faster Red Bull, the chase was on. However, the Spanish driver was given a five-second penalty for starting the race incorrectly, which he served during his first stop caused by a yellow flag when his teammate Lance Stroll retired from the race.

Current reigning champion Max Verstappen had the fastest laps in all three practices with Checo second. But Verstappen had an issue with his drive shaft which caused him to start the race in P15. Some might say a safety car allowed Max Verstappen to gain positions behind race leader Sergio Pérez. This battle will be entertaining to watch if it ends up like the 2016 Hamilton-Rosberg fight for the championship, The Minister of Defence vs The Dutch Lion.

Charles Leclerc was in a very strong position this weekend after taking on a fresh engine and qualifying with the second fastest after taking on a fresh engine. However, he had to serve a ten-place grid penalty, putting him twelfth on the grid. Leclerc quickly made his way through the pack and was seventh at the end of lap nine. But both drivers pitted and shortly after there was an incident that called for a safety car. In this incident, all the other drivers pitted and saved several crucial seconds. Sergio Pérez came out in front after pitting and his teammate behind him, with Alonso in third place. This allowed Pérez to get a significant jump on the rest of the drivers and he was able to maintain his lead for the remainder of the race, with Alonso and Leclerc coming in third and fifth respectively.

McLaren drivers are struggling this season. Oscar Pisatri started the race in the eighth place, but quickly lost places after losing part of his front wing. The team has been struggling to keep up with their competitors, as they have been unable to find the right balance between their power and aerodynamic performance. This has resulted in their drivers being unable to keep up with the other teams. He ended the race in P15. Lando Norris had a terrible weekend, starting in P19 and ending in P17. Does McLaren have enough to get into the points next time?

Mercedes drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton placed third and fourth and Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished sixth and seventh place. Max Verstappen leads the Drivers Championship by one point after claiming the fastest lap with a 1:31.906 time. Mercedes have been the dominant team in recent years, but Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team have been pushing them hard. His performance in this race has put him in the Drivers Championship. One point separates him from his teammate in second place.

As the battle between the Dutch Lion and the Minister of Defence continues in Australia, it is scheduled to continue Sunday, April 2nd at 7:00 a.m. This high-stakes battle will decide who reigns supreme in this season’s Drivers Championship.
